A new liberal television channel was launched in Egypt on Oct. 6. ON TV is owned by Egyptian businessman Naguib Sawiris, marking his second foray into television programming following the successful launch of youth channel OTV in 2007.

Since I moved to Cairo, however, despite the availability of high quality salons and the above average know-how of local hairdressers, beauty salon disasters have occurred with disturbing frequency.

Prominent Egyptian actor Sayed Badreya has acted in such popular American movies as Independence Day, Shallow Hal, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, and most recently, the 2008 blockbuster Iron Man. He may have been typecast as an “Arab baddy,” but has no complaints about life in Hollywood.

Egypt has been the start of the road to fame and stardom for many Arab singers. Some believe that songs sung in an Egyptian accent help them become widely popular. Songs introducing most Egyptian soap operas during the last Ramadan such as those of Lebanese singer Wa’al Jasar in Al-Dali, Kuwaiti singer Nabil Sh’al in Jidar al-Qalb, and Syrian singer Wa’ad al-Bahri in Asmahan were sung in the Egyptian dialect. Rami Ayash and Maya Nasri were also among the many Arabic singers heard by soap opera watchers over Ramadan.

The world’s most famous classical musicians recently celebrated the life of late opera legend Luciano Pavarotti with a charity concert in Jordan’s ancient city of Petra that was part of a three-day event coinciding with his birthday. A charity concert benefiting humanitarian projects in Jordan’s ancient city of Petra on Oct. 12 celebrated the life of opera legend Luciano Pavarotti. Coinciding with the late tenor’s birthday, the concert was part of a three-day event, including a memorial service for close friends and family outside Petra’s ancient Al-Khaznah (Arabic for “treasury”). Pavarotti died of cancer in 2007. |
